MARCANTONIO FRANCESCHINI

Bologna 1648 – 1729 Bologna

Franceschini studied under Carlo Cignani, a student of Francesco Albani, so Bolognese classicism was his artistic homeland. Yet compared to his Italian painting colleagues, he pursued the principles of this style with undeviating strictness. In this respect he resembled French classicists such as Eustache Le Sueur.

Franceschini created both large-format altar paintings and small cabinet pieces, but his particular talent was reflected in the numerous fresco cycles which made up a substantial proportion of his oeuvre.

Appreciation of Franceschini’s painting by Prince Johann Adam Andreas I, who oversaw construction of the Garden Palace, knew no bounds. From 1692 until his death he conducted a lively correspondence with him, thus providing a unique historical-cultural document of the relationship between an artist and his patron. Franceschini executed a major part of the painting work at the Garden Palace.
