Recently acquired works include important sketches by Peter Paul Rubens and Rembrandt’s Amor. A number of spectacular sculptures (Mantegna, Sansovino, Soldani) have also been added to the collection, as has the Portrait of an Old Man by Franz Hals. This portrait was originally part of the Rothschild Collection and was later to be found at the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Fine Arts) in Vienna.
Curatorial policy aims to close gaps in the holdings and complement existing sections of the collection. The Liechtenstein collection has an international focus, and since the beginning has endeavoured to bring together the best and most current works.
Austrian art also features, being the foundation of the extensive collection of German paintings dating from the Middle Ages through to the Baroque and Classicism. A prominent role is thereby played by Austrian and Bohemian painters, particularly as regards the Classicistic and Biedermeier periods.
The finest examples of such works — and only the best make it into the collection — are the equal of any other international masterpieces from the same epoch. The objective of such a collection is to facilitate a contrast between these two worlds within one holding. Various pictures by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, a sculpture by Josef Bergler and an important relief by Johann Martin Fischer, all of which have recently been acquired, can be seen in this context. |
