Paris Bordone predominantly lived and worked in Venice where he was a member of the Scuola Grande di San Marco from 1535 onwards. He only left the city to undertake important journey to the royal court of France, to Augsburg and to Milan. His study of Titian’s paintings had a profound influence on his oeuvre, as reflected in the craftsmanship of his rendering of subjects’ material qualities. Only in his later works did he intensify his means of expression to give a somewhat affected Mannerism, which isolated him from the Venetian masters. |
