| The superb Portrait of Thiery, Landlord of the Wolf-in-the-Meadow Inn, painted in 1833, goes quite beyond the usual Biedermeier standard of objectivity tempered by engagement in its directness, and sketches a living soul with as much vivacity as exactitude. The innkeeper appears to regard the spectator in a spirit of scepticism, maintaining a self-confident distance from his interlocutor. Portraits such as this one are in every respect the equal of those painted at this period by Jean- Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867) or by Jacques-Louis David (1748–1825). |
